Why Backorder an Expired .HK Domain?
.HK is Hong Kong's country-code domain and one of the clearest ways to signal a connection with the Hong Kong market. It suits local companies, regional services, technology projects, media brands and international businesses operating in the territory.
The namespace is administered by Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation Limited (HKIRC). Short commercial terms, English and Cantonese brand names, finance-related domains and location-based names can attract strong demand when they return to availability.
The .HK Domain Family
Direct .HK is the broadest option in the family. HKIRC also maintains category-based second-level namespaces:
- .com.hk for eligible commercial organisations.
- .net.hk for eligible network-related organisations and service providers.
- .org.hk for eligible non-profit organisations.
The direct namespace and the category namespaces are not interchangeable. The proposed holder must meet the registry conditions that apply to the selected extension.
Registration Requirements
Direct .HK names are open to local and overseas individuals and organisations. Supporting documents are not normally required at the initial application stage, although HKIRC or the registrar may request identity or business records for verification.
The category namespaces have separate eligibility rules. A successful acquisition attempt cannot override a registry restriction, reserved-name rule, documentary requirement or prior-rights dispute.
.HK Naming Rules
An English .HK label can use letters, digits and hyphens. It must begin and end with a letter or digit, cannot place hyphens in both the third and fourth positions, and the full domain including dots and suffix cannot exceed 63 characters.
The .HK Expiry and Release Lifecycle
An expired .HK registration does not become available immediately. If renewal fees are not paid, the name enters a registry black-out period during which the former holder may apply for reinstatement. HKIRC determines the duration, with its published policy setting a maximum of 90 calendar days.
The acquisition attempt is carried out through the appropriate registrar or registry channel. Catching remains a best-effort service because availability can change, eligibility may require review and other applicants may seek the same domain.
Pricing and Auctions
A .HK backorder starts at €50. If you are the only Backorders Domains customer targeting the name and we catch it, the price remains €50 before applicable taxes or registry-specific charges. If several customers placed a backorder, a 7-day proxy bid auction decides who receives the domain.
Before You Place a .HK Backorder
Check trademarks, company names and other prior rights before ordering. HKIRC maintains a formal dispute-resolution framework for qualifying conflicts, so a strong generic or geographic domain is usually a safer target than a name that depends on another party's brand.
