Why Backorder Expired .LI Domains?

.LI is Liechtenstein's country-code domain. It works for local businesses and institutions, but the namespace is also open internationally and is used for brands, technology projects, personal sites and domain names built around the letters “li”.

A backorder records your interest before an existing registration completes its deletion process. The attempt remains best-effort: the former holder may still recover the name, and the registry must first make it available for a new registration.

About NIC Liechtenstein and the .LI Namespace

.LI is operated by Switch through NIC Liechtenstein on behalf of the Principality's Office for Communications. Registrations are made through registrars and valid requests are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

.LI registrations are direct second-level names such as example.li. The registration is generally maintained without a maximum duration while it is not deleted or transferred, although registrar billing normally runs in recurring 12-month periods.

Who Can Register .LI Domains?

.LI is open to individuals and legal entities without a citizenship, residence or local-domicile requirement. Holders must provide accurate and current contact information and remain responsible for respecting applicable laws and third-party rights.

• Length: 3 to 63 characters before .LI.
• Characters: letters, numbers, hyphens and supported Latin IDN characters.
• Registration level: direct second level, such as brand.li.
• Allocation: first come, first served once the domain is available.

The .LI Deletion and Release Process

After deletion, a .LI domain enters an official protected transition period before it can be registered again. During this stage, a third party cannot simply take the name and the previous holder may still have a recovery route.

Current official publications do not state the transition length consistently, so the live status should be checked through NIC Liechtenstein before any expected release. No exact release time or successful acquisition can be guaranteed.

Internationalised .LI Domains

.LI supports a defined set of Latin characters with accents and diacritics. Internationalised names are represented in the DNS using ACE/Punycode, while compatible browsers can display the native-character version.

Pricing and Auction System

Every .LI backorder starts at a flat €50. If only one customer backorders the domain and we catch it, that customer receives it at the flat fee. If several customers target the same name, a 7-day proxy bid auction decides the winner.
