Why Backorder Expired .MU Domains?
.MU is the country-code top-level domain for Mauritius, a stable, high-income island nation in the Indian Ocean known for its offshore financial sector, tourism industry and growing fintech ecosystem. Mauritius is one of Africa's top-ranked countries for ease of doing business and attracts substantial foreign investment thanks to its favorable tax treaties and bilingual (English / French) business environment.
But .MU is much more than a local TLD. Short, direct .MU domains are a global favorite for music-related brands — "mu" instantly evokes music, muse and multimedia, making names like al.mu, tem.mu or stu.mu extremely brandable. The .MU namespace is small compared to larger country extensions, so every quality drop is an opportunity.
Registry & History
.MU was delegated in 1995 and has gone through several administrative changes. Internet Direct Ltd. acted as trustee from 1995, and after a period of transition the registry is now administered by the Mauritius Network Information Centre (MU-NIC), operating through accredited registrars. In recent years .MU has also been operated in partnership with Identity Digital (formerly Afilias/Donuts).
We also provide a dedicated backorder service for Mauritius' commercial second-level extension: .co.mu.
Why Direct .MU?
- Two characters only — extremely short, ideal for branding and URL shorteners.
- "Music" association — strong semantic value for music, audio and entertainment brands.
- No local presence required — open to individuals and legal entities worldwide.
- Small namespace — quality names are rare, making drops highly competitive.
Who Can Register .MU Domains?
.MU is available for registration by both individuals and legal entities worldwide, without any local presence requirement. You do not need to be a Mauritian resident or have a Mauritian company. For legal entities, a company registration or VAT number is typically requested during registration. Registration terms range from 1 to 10 years, and domain names must be between 2 and 63 characters.
The .MU Domain Expiry & Drop Lifecycle
The .MU lifecycle broadly follows this pattern:
- Grace Period — ~30 days: After expiry, the original holder can still renew at the standard price.
- Redemption Period — ~30 days: Recovery still possible with an additional redemption fee.
- Pending Delete — ~5 days: The domain is queued for deletion from the registry.
- Domain Drop: Around 65 days after expiry, the domain becomes available again for public registration.
Our automated snapback system continuously monitors MU-NIC and fires registration requests the instant an expired .MU domain becomes available.
Pricing & Auction System
A backorder for any .MU domain costs a flat €50. If you're the only bidder, you get the domain at that price. If multiple users want the same expired domain, a 7-day proxy bid auction determines the winner — you only pay just above the second-highest bid.
The .MU Opportunity
Between the local Mauritian economy (fintech, offshore services, tourism) and the global demand for music-themed domain hacks, .MU sits at the intersection of two very different but equally interesting markets. Short direct .MU names rarely stay available for long — backorders are the best way to get a shot at them.
