Why Backorder Expired .EU Domains?
.EU gives a website a clear European identity. It is used by companies trading across borders, organisations working across several member states, multilingual services and projects that want a name broader than a single national extension.
Useful names are not always available when a project begins. A .EU backorder lets you register your interest in an existing domain before its deletion process is complete. The acquisition attempt remains best-effort and depends on the name becoming available under EURid rules.
About EURid and the .EU Namespace
The .EU country-code domain is operated by EURid. Registrations are made through accredited registrars and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis when a name is available.
.EU registrations are direct second-level names such as example.eu. Registration terms can run from one to ten years, with renewal handled through the registrar.
Who Can Register .EU Domains?
Eligibility covers citizens of European Union member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway regardless of residence. It also covers residents, companies and organisations established in those countries, subject to the current EURid rules.
- Length: 2 to 63 characters before .EU.
- Characters: letters, numbers and hyphens, with the applicable EURid syntax rules.
- Registration term: 1 to 10 years.
- Allocation: first come, first served once the domain is available.
The .EU Quarantine and Release Process
When a .EU domain is deleted, EURid places it in a 40-day quarantine period. During that time, the former holder can ask a registrar to reactivate or transfer and restore the name.
If the domain is not restored, it returns to general availability after quarantine. EURid's WHOIS service shows the relevant status and scheduled release information; placing a backorder does not guarantee that the registry will release the name or that the acquisition attempt will succeed.
Internationalised .EU Domains
EURid supports internationalised domain names using Latin characters. It also operates the Greek .ευ and Cyrillic .ею variants, although this service page concerns the Latin-script .EU extension only. Scripts cannot be mixed within a registered label.
Pricing and Auction System
Every .EU backorder starts at a flat €50. If only one customer backorders the domain and we catch it, that customer receives it at the flat fee. If several customers target the same name, a 7-day proxy bid auction decides the winner.
Best Use Cases for .EU Backorders
.EU names are well suited to cross-border ecommerce, European associations, multilingual products, regional services and brands that operate in several European countries. The extension provides a geographic signal to users without tying the project to one national market.
