This is important for SEO and branding: direct .KE is shorter, but .CO.KE is still heavily recognized as the traditional business namespace.

Who Can Register .KE Domains?

Direct .KE domains are general-purpose Kenyan names. KeNIC’s public FAQ focuses documentary restrictions on specific third-level categories such as .go.ke, .ac.ke and .sc.ke; direct .KE and .co.ke are the practical choices for normal commercial and brand use.

• .ke: direct second-level registration, one label before .KE, no specialization.
• .co.ke: third-level commercial namespace for companies and business use.
• .go.ke, .ac.ke, .sc.ke: require supporting documents because they are restricted institutional spaces.
• Registration term: KeNIC states that .KE domains can be registered or renewed for 1–5 years.

The .KE Domain Expiry & Drop Lifecycle

KeNIC publishes a specific .KE lifecycle. After the normal registration term, an unpaid domain enters an expiry phase of 90 days. Fourteen days after expiry, it is auto-suspended and enters a 14-day renewal grace period during which the owner can renew through the registrar.

• Registration: 1–5 years, as long as the term does not exceed the registry maximum.
• Expiry phase: 90 days after the subscription lapses.
• Renewal grace period: 14 days after expiry; the registrant can still renew.
• Suspension period: from day 15 to day 90 after expiry; services such as websites and email stop working, but the registrar can renew and restore the domain.
• Pending delete / purge: 10 days after the domain expires on the 90th day; restoration must be requested through the registrar.
• Release: after the redemption period ends, the domain is deleted and released on a first-come, first-served basis.

Direct .KE vs .CO.KE

Direct .KE is shorter and cleaner for a modern Kenyan brand. .CO.KE is more explicit for business use and has a larger legacy footprint. If the exact keyword is unavailable under one extension, the other can still be valuable. We support both .ke backorders and .co.ke backorders.
