Why Backorder Expired .LU Domains?

.LU is the official country-code top-level domain for Luxembourg, a small market with outsized digital value: private banking, investment funds, legal services, EU institutions, cross-border ecommerce, SaaS and holding-company structures all compete for clean Luxembourg branding. A short .LU domain tells users and search engines that a project is anchored in Luxembourg, not just translated into French or German.

Because the namespace is compact, premium .LU names are scarce. Exact-match finance terms, city/service combinations, French and German commercial keywords, and short brandable names are usually registered for years. When one expires, backordering a .LU domain is the practical way to be ready at the deletion window instead of checking availability manually.

About DNS-LU and the Luxembourg Namespace

The .LU namespace is operated by DNS-LU, the registry service of the Restena Foundation. DNS-LU offers two management modes: classic management, where requests received before 3pm on a Luxembourg working day are processed the same day, and online management, where paid operations are processed in real time through the my.lu platform.

DNS-LU also allows a domain to be registered without publishing nameservers in the .LU zone. These “reserved” .LU names are billed and governed like active domains, which matters for backorders: a caught domain can be held even before final DNS/hosting decisions are made.

Who Can Register .LU Domains?

.LU registrations are direct second-level registrations such as example.lu; there is no widely used public .com.lu-style layer for normal commercial use. DNS-LU requires the standard domain contacts for management: holder, administrative contact, invoicing contact and technical contact. The same person or legal entity can fill several of these roles.

  • Length: .LU names can be from 1 to 63 characters before the dot.
  • Characters: numbers, letters, some accented characters and hyphens are allowed.
  • Hyphen rule: a .LU domain can only start and end with a letter or number.
  • Registration term: one year under classic management; one or two years under online management.

The .LU Expiry & Deletion Timeline

DNS-LU’s FAQ gives concrete renewal and deletion rules. Under classic management, the renewal invoice is issued 30 days before expiry. Reminders are sent on the 30th and 60th day after the invoice date. If the invoice remains unpaid on the 60th day, the domain is deactivated and services such as email and web no longer work. On the 90th day, the domain is deleted.

Under online management, DNS-LU sends renewal notifications within two months of the expiry date and again five days before expiry if no action has been taken. If a .LU name was deleted within the past 30 days, DNS-LU says it can still be recovered by submitting a new request or restoration request, with restoration fees and a new one-year period.

Second-Level Domains

.LU is primarily a direct-registration namespace. For SEO and brand protection, the domain you want is normally brand.lu, not a third-level label under a commercial subdomain. That makes short direct .LU names especially important: there is no large .com.lu pool to fall back on.

Pricing & Auction System

Every .LU backorder costs a flat €50. If only one customer backorders the domain and we catch it, that customer gets it at the flat fee. If several users target the same expired .LU name, a 7-day proxy bid auction decides the winner.

Best Use Cases for .LU Backorders

.LU backorders are especially useful for Luxembourg finance and fund terms, local lead-generation domains, multilingual French/German/English brands, EU corporate names, law/accounting terms and defensive brand protection. For names that were registered years ago, the drop is often the only realistic acquisition window.
