Why Backorder Expired .HU Domains?

.HU is the official country-code top-level domain for Hungary. It is the standard namespace for Hungarian companies, publishers, ecommerce stores, tourism projects, SaaS tools, local services and Hungarian-language SEO. A .HU domain tells users that the site is intended for Hungary, not merely translated from another market.

Strong .HU names are hard to acquire through normal registration because the good generic words, short brands and city/service combinations were registered years ago. If a valuable name enters deletion, a backorder .HU domain request gives you a chance to catch it when it becomes available again.

About Domain.hu and the Hungarian Registry

The .HU namespace is governed by the official Domain.hu registration policy of the Hungarian registry system. The policy is more detailed than many open ccTLDs: it defines eligible applicants, formal name requirements, public announcement of conditional registrations, dispute procedures, suspension, withdrawal and redemption.

This matters for expired .HU domains because the release path is not just a simple “available/unavailable” switch. A Hungarian domain can be conditionally registered, advertised, complained against, withdrawn, restored during a redemption window, or finally deleted and made available again.

Who Can Register .HU Domains?

The .HU policy allows domain applicants to be citizens or legal entities of any country, unless applicable law prevents it. However, there is an important Hungarian/EU eligibility distinction: applicants from the EU, Council of Europe, EEA, EFTA, countries bordering Hungary, and Hungarian residence-permit holders fall within the normal eligibility groups. Other applicants may need to show an economic or other activity that justifies use of a .HU domain if the registry or registrar requests evidence.

  • Age: natural person applicants must be over 18.
  • Length: .HU names can be 2 to 63 characters before the dot.
  • Characters: Latin letters, Hungarian accented letters, numbers and hyphens are allowed.
  • Hyphen rule: no hyphen at the beginning or end; no double hyphen as the 3rd and 4th characters.

Conditional Registration and the 8-Day Publication Period

One distinctive .HU rule is conditional registration. The official policy states that a conditionally registered domain is publicly advertised by the Registry for 8 days in the list of domain names awaiting registration. If no objection is filed during the publication period, the domain is registered. If a complaint is filed, the outcome depends on the Domain Decision Maker procedure.

This is why .HU domain strategy is different from simple open TLDs: rights, names and Hungarian dispute rules matter. For backorders, it means the target must be monitored through the registry’s actual state, not just through a generic availability checker.

The .HU Redemption & Deletion Process

The .HU policy says that, in some cases, a 30-day redemption period precedes deletion. During that period, the domain is advertised on the public list of domain names in redemption before deletion, and the former registrant or other policy-defined persons may restore or claim it. After withdrawal and deletion, the name can be freely applied for again.

For a buyer trying to catch an expired .HU name, the practical point is clear: the most valuable signal is not a vague expiry date, but the domain’s real registry status — conditionally registered, registered, in redemption, withdrawn or deleted.

Second-Level Hungarian Names

In addition to direct .HU domains, we support Hungarian second-level-style targets such as .co.hu, .info.hu and .org.hu. They follow the same Hungarian policy environment but have different positioning: commercial, informational or organizational.

Pricing & Auction System

Every .HU backorder costs a flat €50. If you are the only bidder and we catch the domain, you get it at that price. If multiple users target the same expired .HU domain, a 7-day proxy bid auction determines the winner.

The Opportunity in Hungarian Domains

.HU is valuable for Hungarian-language exact-match domains, Budapest and regional service terms, ecommerce categories, travel/tourism projects, local media and defensive brand protection. The official .HU rules are stricter than a generic TLD, but that stricter environment is part of what gives good .HU names their credibility.
