Hungarian Registration Rules That Matter

The official .HU policy allows applicants from any country unless applicable law prevents it, but applicants outside the EU / Council of Europe / EEA / EFTA / countries bordering Hungary, or outside Hungarian residence-permit categories, may need to show an economic or other activity justifying use of a .HU domain if asked.

Hungarian names can be 2 to 63 characters, can use Latin and Hungarian accented letters, digits and hyphens, but cannot begin or end with a hyphen and cannot contain two consecutive hyphens as the 3rd and 4th characters.

The 8-Day .HU Publication Rule

Conditionally registered Hungarian domains are publicly advertised by the Registry for 8 days in the list of domain names awaiting registration. If no objection is filed, the name proceeds to registration. If a complaint is filed, the Domain Decision Maker process can affect the outcome. This rule is one reason Hungarian drops need more careful handling than a simple open namespace.

Redemption, Withdrawal and Deletion

Domain.hu’s policy states that in some cases a 30-day redemption period precedes deletion, with the domain listed publicly as being in redemption before deletion. During that time, restoration or a policy-defined claim may still be possible. Only after deletion can the name be freely applied for again.
