Why Backorder Expired .FI Domains?

.FI is Finland's country-code domain and gives users a clear Finnish market signal. It is used by businesses, organisations, public-interest projects, publishers and individuals, while remaining open to registrants outside Finland.

A .FI backorder is useful when the name you want is already registered but may later complete the registry's expiry or deletion process. The acquisition attempt remains best-effort and can only proceed if Traficom makes the domain available.

About Traficom and the Finnish Namespace

The .FI registry is operated by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom. Domains are registered through .FI registrars and must be recorded in the real holder's name with accurate contact information.

.FI registrations are direct second-level names such as example.fi. Registration and renewal periods can run from one to five years.

Who Can Register .FI Domains?

Individuals, companies and organisations can register .FI domains without a Finnish residence, domicile or local-presence requirement. The holder is responsible for checking that the name does not infringe protected names, trademarks or other rights.

  • Length: 2 to 63 characters before .FI.
  • Characters: letters, numbers, hyphens and supported Finnish and Sámi IDN characters.
  • Registration term: 1 to 5 years.
  • Registration level: direct second level, such as brand.fi.

The .FI Grace Period and Release Process

After expiry, a .FI domain enters a one-month grace period. The holder can still renew it during that period. A voluntary or administrative deletion also starts a one-month grace period, during which the deletion may still be reversed where the rules permit.

If the domain is not restored, it can become available after the grace period. Traficom's public lookup can show an expected availability date, but the registry does not promise one universal release time to the second and a successful catch cannot be guaranteed.

Internationalised .FI Domains

.FI supports the characters å, ä and ö, along with characters used in the Sámi languages spoken in Finland. These internationalised names are stored in the DNS in ACE/Punycode form. Traficom notes that software support can vary, especially for email use.

Pricing and Auction System

Every .FI backorder starts at a flat €50. If only one customer backorders the domain and we catch it, that customer receives it at the flat fee. If several customers target the same name, a 7-day proxy bid auction decides the winner.

Best Use Cases for .FI Backorders

.FI backorders fit Finnish ecommerce, local services, technology companies, associations, media projects, personal sites and defensive brand registrations. A .FI name can also be held for a future project before a website or email service is launched.
